After the store was demolished by Hurricane Sandy last year, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies relocated a little bit farther down the waterfront in Red Hook. Donny and I stopped by last weekend, after another visit to the Red Hook Ball Field vendors. It took us a few minutes to find the new location, which is situated next to a picturesque pier and Louis Valentino, Jr. Park. Steve’s prides itself on importing actual Key Limes, which are smaller and more acidic than their more common counterparts, in their pies. One bite of the Swingle — an individual-sized Key Lime Pie, on a stick, dipped in chocolate, and frozen — let me know that they hadn’t missed a beat in the move. It’s the perfect dessert for a summer day; the blend of tart Key Lime, slightly salty crust, and sweet chocolate make a great frozen treat. If chocolate’s not your thing, they also sell the traditional pies, in multiple sizes. It’s a little bit out of the way, but a trip to Steve’s should be on your to-do list this summer.
