“Vegetarian” may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of an Austrian beer bar, but Der Kommissar in Park Slope has some great vegetarian food. They even have some vegan sausages in addition to the meaty ones; they use Field Roast brand, which I’m a big fan of, but I actually prefer to order up a bunch of sides. The potato salad and cucumber salad are vibrant and acidic, and taste fresh. They are a perfect counterpoint for a warm pretzel roll and a dish of Liptauer cheese. In this case the Liptauer is a soft, sharp cheese flavored with herbs and paprika and studded with bits of pickles. At $3 each (well, $5 for the cheese) it’s a relatively cheap drinking snack. Because of course, all of the food goes well with their great selection of Austrian and German beers.
